Happy New Year!

The final tally has come in from the Monte Vista Hotel’s Deck the Trees Benefit for the Swannaoa Valley Christian Ministries. The event raised a total of $12,645 so that the SVCM could assist needy residents of the Valley this year. This came from sponsorships from local businesses as well as the “votes” for the trees decorated by individuals and groups in Eastern Buncombe county.

This was the 6th year for this event and also the 6th year that several organizations have participated. Among them has been this group. From our humble beginnings with a 2 foot tree decorated with only enough tatted snowflakes to say that we had some, the number of hand made lace decorations has grown sufficiently that this year we were able to decorate a 6 foot tree well.

Each year members of the group have created a different type of motif for the tree. This year it was bells. We were able to add 5 three dimensional bells and a 2-D bell to our collection. We also chose a slightly more out-of-the-way location for the tree we were using. Event organizer Libba Fairleigh told me that when the tree wasn’t right in the front of the hotel’s lobby as had been the case in years past, visitors came to the front desk and asked where it might be found. I was told by one of the hotel employees that it was his favorite “because it just seemed to be more traditional for our mountains.”

Thanks to everyone who came looking for us an to all those who so generously gave by way of their sponsorship and votes and to the membership whose talents are supporting those in need throughout the coming year.
